{Eleven (39)} &diams It's not easy being (human)
[This entry appears late morning. The writing is shaky and somewhat less bold than usual, as though she isn't pressing her pen into the page very firmly.]
Bridge, I am afraid I do not feel very well at all; I shall be absent from the Yard today and perhaps a few more days as well. I am not entirely sure at this time.
Youth, my apologies for not showing up at our training session this morning; I shall have to make it up later, I suppose.
Bastet, as things stand I will be unable to collect from the current Wilderness, sorry for giving you such short notice.
[Pause] Genius, would you mind stopping by at some point today?
-Fred

[Slowlog]
Something is wrong with people, I think. They are not... Normally I can sense some. I cannot now. And Bell has paid for that, but I do not think he is angry anymore.
[As Genius called, Youth looked out toward the sound of his voice.]
Come in, Genius!
[Then he glanced at Fred.]
That is all right, right? I should have asked you first. I am sorry.
[Slowlog]
[Fred continued spooning up the soup while she waited for Genius to come into the room. Even a sudden feeling of apprehension about what he might discover making her stomach twist a bit wasn't enough to kill her appetite. Why was she so hungry? This made no sense.]
[Slowlog]
Huh. That was fun. No wonder Qi never used his door. With a slight grin he continued to Fred's room and peaked in.]
Fred? Man-friend? [Before he was even in the room all the way he was pulling out a stethoscope and a sphygmomanometer, an old school manual cuff that Genius didn't entirely feel comfortable using. It felt so...low tech.]
Ok this is one for the books. I'm looking at a patient eating soup in bed while suffering from cardiac arrest. Go me. What on earth happened and good God, why is it always you? [He glared at Youth] And you! You're getting my evil glare by virtue of being here!
Re: [Slowlog]
I came to help! I should not get glared at! She said she was not feeling well so I have brought soup! And she did not mention one of her hearts not working until when you called through the window I used to get in!
[He directed a not-pleased look at Fred.]
All you told us was that you were not feeling well and that you were not certain until he got here. I do not know why you would not tell myself and Bell what was going on.
[Slowlog]
[She fiddled with the spoon a little.] And... I am not feeling well, but... not as poorly as I should be feeling in this situation. It is most strange. [She finally looked up, her expression betraying her worry and confusion.] Another thing I had not said yet... my left heart. I think it may be in the wrong place, but I am not entirely certain. It is a great deal harder to get a sense of my own body, and I do not know why.
[Slowlog] According to my research Time Lords have a core body temp of 60 F, is this right?
[He turned back to Fred] Ridiculously hungry could be your body burning up more energy now that it lacks a second heart to do..whatever it is a second heart does. Just hold off on the soup for a minute will ya? You know most people don't know where their hearts are. The fact that you do is just another sign of your freakish alien-ness.
[Genius walked swiftly over to where Fred was reclined on her bed and gestured for Youth to make himself useful and take the soup bowl away. He reached for Fred's left wrist...and paused. Did she feel...warmer? It wasn't like he touched her a whole lot but...
His bag went plop! Onto the bed and Genius paused to dig around before he found the thermometer.] Open! [Someone lacked a bedside manner.]
The stethoscope went into his ears and the round piece ..hovered in his hand ] Er...Fred I need to...you know. [He blushed. He could get a better reading if she let him hold it directly to her skin. Lifting her shirt up or opening a button if it had any would do]
[Slowlog]
[Genius got a slightly miffed look.] I cannot help it if trouble seems to like me! It is not as if I wake up and wonder how I can get in trouble that day!
[With a nod Youth retrieved the empty bowl, tryng to help how he could. At Genius' blush Youth deliberately turned away to give Fred some privacy.] It is strange that your hearts are moving around too. I would guess that they have not done this before? Otherwise you would not be worried?
[Slowlog] - Yup, though for some reason no one remarks on this in the show >[
[She let Youth take the bowl without complaint. She was feeling much better now that she had eaten it, and felt simply tired now rather than energy-less. Perhaps Genius was onto something with that theory that she was burning more energy now, though she couldn't for the life of her think why she would suddenly have that problem.
Genius' demand got a startled look, and then Fred opened her mouth for the thermometer obediently.
She held herself back from rolling her eyes at Genius' blush. This was a medical examination, not her trying to get him to undress her or anything silly like that. She yanked up the hem of her nightshirt, then took the end of the stethoscope from him and, sliding it up under her shirt, placed it against where her left heart should be normally, holding it along the side of her ribs.] My hearts should not move at all; they are hardly designed to do something so unnatural. Then again, they should not randomly stop beating either. I do not think that it is nearly as bad as a Human's heart stopping--I have another to take up the slack, at least temporarily, after all--but it is hardly a sign of good health.
[Slowlog]
Trouble likes both of you far too much. In fact I think it finds me because it finds you! I don't like the sharies one bit!
[He fiddled with the thermometer since its was all well and good for Fred to open her mouth, but she needed to stop talking first.]
Blah blah blah. Less talkie, more sitting there and letting me work!
[With that he stuck the thermometer into Fred's mouth and focused on the stethoscope. And frowned.]
No, that's not the right--here let me--
[He was so distracted by what he wasn't hearing that he didn't think twice about reaching out and touching the stethoscope through Fred's shirt. He guided her hand through the cloth to where a normal human's heart should be. There. He heard it now--one steady heartbeat.
But how?]
Oh my God. It DID move! ...Wait how is that...[he moved her hand again.] Ok. That's just creepy.
[He removed his hand and plucked the thermometer out of Fred's mouth and checked it. His eyes widened at the result.]
...98.1 F. Wow.
[Slowlog]
If someone is listening, they might hear a noise of something small rolling along the carpet. That'd be pink!Haro, coming on 00's instructions to monitor the situation.
She herself is standing behind her bedroom door, listening to what she can hear of the conversation, but Youth and Fred are occupied with each other and she's not willing to put up with Genius' presence enough to come out unless she has to. Youth will keep him from doing any immoral scientist things.]
[Slowlog]
[Youth was now smirking just a teensy bit.] Trouble will find anyone it wants to here. And it is polite to share, except for illnesses.
[At Genius' exclamations Youth stopped looking away, glancing over to make sure everything was all right.] That sounds normal? Except it does for a human and you are not... [Then he paused, glancing between the two before he started talking again.] I cannot sense you, like I normally cannot sense Genius, Derrick, Stoneface... the humans without specific abilities. And I could not sense Bell or Lotus either. What if something like that has happened? You are all like Genius?
[It wasn't meant as an insult, just a comparison. He was more thinking as he was talking instead of thinking before speaking. And he hadn't yet put two and two together and realized it wasn't just others who were missing abilities.]
[Hearing the noise, Youth glanced over to the side but said nothing. This was the house of 00. He wasn't surprised by the little pink thing just like he wouldn't be surprised to see Shizuku wandering around.]
Re: [Slowlog]
But she was distracted from her irritation when he moved her hand to where a Human's heart should be, and... seemed to think it was the right place.
And then he announced what her temperature currently was. Fred frowned, ignoring the way her hearts--heart--was starting to beat a little faster.] Ninety-eight point...? But... if... that cannot be right. I am not a Human. [The last sentence was said a little weakly, as though she wasn't quite sure about the truth of it.
Aven suddenly trotted into the room and jumped up on the bed next to his mistress. He licked her hand and she pulled him onto her lap, scratching him behind the ears automatically, more interested in figuring this thing out than really paying attention to him.] I... I cannot be a Human. It makes no sense.
[...though some small part of her mind was oh-so-helpfully producing all the nonsensical things Edensphere had done to them in the past, such as turning people into faeries, or children, even animals. It was perfectly likely she could be a Human now, as little as she liked the idea of it.]
[Slowlog]
[Of course that smile faded as soon as Youth made the comment about everyone being like him.]
HEY! I resent that! Why do you have to remind me how incredibly lame it is to be 'normal'?! Besides DERRICK is normal too, pick on him! [pout face]
[His indignation didn't last for long though, as Fred took the news rather badly--for her anyways. That was like a cold splash of water on Genius' face. This wasn't a science experiment--this was his friend. This was Fred. Why was it so easy to forget that?
He shook his head and awkwardly patted Fred on the knee]
There there?
[Wow he sucked at this. The fact that Aven was currently doing better at the comfort thing made Genius glare at the dog with a bit of envy.]
I would say it's impossible but think about it--last week I had cat ears and a tail. It's painfully obvious that the Conspiracy can do whatever they want to us, including change your anatomy. We don't know for sure what's going on but Youth has a point. There's lots of people being affected right now and this could be one of those things. That means it's temporary. I want to take you down to Medical, and run some tests just to be sure.
[He looked at Youth] You too man-friend. If you can't feel anybody, it may mean you're affected....is that a pink ball on the ground?
[Urge to kick...rising.]
[Slowlog]
[Youth was completely unaffected by the pout face. Sorry, Genius, but he gets Lotus Puppy Eyes all the time and compared to that a Genius pout is nothing.] I did not call you lame, and Derrick is not here to be an example.
[He gave Fred what was supposed to be an encouraging smile.] I am sure you will go back to how you normally are. That is what happens. And I cannot feel the people that are affected. It just means that many are affected. [Denial. He couldn't feel anyone. But the thought of losing one of his 'senses' was a bit worriesome.] And that I will be concerned about people and it is not at all being overly concerned if you were worried that someone was dead or an overreaction to make sure they're not.
[With a shrug, Youth glanced back down at the ball.] Yes. As long as it does not try to eat socks that are still on people's feet I am not worried about it.
[Slowlog]
[She nodded, hoping it had even a little of her usual confidence.] Yes. Temporary, of course. These things usually last anywhere from a few days to a week... that isn't so bad. [It was probably pathetically obvious that she was saying all that to calm and convince herself, but she didn't care. She almost desperately hoped that she wouldn't be stuck in this body for too very long--despite the knowledge that she had been turned into a Human, her mind was still telling her that she had to re-start her other heart. The one that was no longer there.
She quelled the shudder that wanted to run through her body with a little difficulty, before she smiled at Genius again. It was a little less strained-looking this time.] Actually, if I could ask, perhaps we could do that on the morrow? I feel quite exhausted just now.
[If she could convince them to leave, she was probably going to sleep for the rest of the day. She certainly felt tired enough to do that.]
